Noetic Science Initiative

The research division of NMI is dedicated to producing and promulgating high-value research proving that MIND MATTERS in all aspects of caregiving – the mind of the patient and the mind of the caregiver.

The ultimate result of NMI’s research efforts will be to establish beyond doubt the causal connections between a patient’s thoughts (as arrived at internally or through external influences) and a patient’s physical and mental condition. Hence, caregivers will understand they no longer have the license to speak haphazardly, for the words of a caregiver can harm or heal.

Here are but a few examples of NMI's research pathway:

  • The Benefits of Pre-Surgical “Waking Suggestion” on Bleeding, Pain Relief and Healing.  This study will demonstrate the influence of ideas on the vascular, perceptual, and healing systems – when those ideas are delivered by an authority figure (i.e., the anesthesiologist). This outcome will give pause to all caregivers who speak haphazardly and cause them to cultivate their communication skills for the sake of improved patient outcomes.

  • Informed Consent: The Benefits of Saying It Right. This important study will show that delivering Informed Consent properly can induce placebo effects, while delivering it incorrectly can evoke nocebo effects. As a consequence of this study, caregivers will know that there is a right way and a wrong way to discuss risks and benefits – positives and negatives – of any condition or treatment. It behooves them, therefore, to learn and practice the right way of delivering this essential information.

  • Placebo for Viral Syndromes: A Three-Arm Study Comparing Placebo, Natural History and Nocebo. The primary lesson of this study is the demonstration that placebo/nocebo effects are the direct result of either positive or negative suggestions delivered by an authority figure. Such suggestions can either improve or impair outcomes when compared with the natural history of the disease.

NMI will conduct numerous other well-designed, well-published studies – all with the purpose of instructing healthcare professionals that MIND MATTERS.
